Two new companies enrich BioRegio Regensburg

The Initiative Interdisciplinary Agency BIOTECH (IA-BIOTECH) is the result of a study from 2007 on the interdisciplinary potential for linking up in the region in the field of life sciences. Via IA-BIOTECH BioPark Regensburg would like to expand the potential in the region and promote development of the BioRegio Regensburg into a technology-spanning network in East Bavaria. On this note the BioPark is in regular dialogue with new suitable companies that can complete the cluster and also provide cooperation between companies and academic working groups in the categories of biotech, life sciences and interdisciplinary fields.

The company Inotech Kunststoff GmbH came out of an engineering office in 1986 and has its headquarters in Nabburg in Upper Palatinate in Schwandorf about 60 kilometres north of Regensburg. The company has been a strong and successful developer of technical injection moulding parts for medical technology, pharmaceutical companies and the cosmetic industry. Inotech employs around 330 people located in Nabburg and Tachov (Czech Republic) in the Bavarian-Bohemian border region. With its systems competency including 3D printers and project management the company designs and manufactures on contract prototypes for industry and research.

The company Kelheim Fibres GmbH is a leading manufacturer worldwide of specialised viscose fibres. In 1935 South German Spinnfaser AG was founded and was encorporated from 1974 - 1994 into  Höchst AG. The plant in Kelheim is located directly at the Danube 28 kilometres upstream from Regensburg and employs 700 employees. Each year 90,000 tonnes of cellulose fibres are produced and exported as various products to 44 countries on 5 continents. The viscose fibres are used in textile and hygiene fields. The products range from teabags, bandages, textiles, banknotes, and cloths to tampons. The Kelheim special fibres are natural materials which in specific applications are equal in value to oil-based plastics and are completely biologically biodegradable.

The Initiative IA-BIOTECH has been a complete success for BioRegio Regensburg to date. To this existing Biotech-Cluster of today 28 companies, a further 15 companies from the fields of pharmaceuticals, analytics, diagnostics and medical technology have just joined and also 12 further companies from the bordering interdisciplinary fields of the paper, glass, metal and textile industries with biological, medical or pharmaceutical projects. The goal of the cluster is to network the 55 companies even better with each other and with the Bavarian Clusters and universities. With a bilingual homepage, brochures, newsletters and events BioPark Regensburg is initiating communication in promoting the national and international economy.
