Third Workshop on Health Care Sector
In December 2015 the results of a location analysis on the health care sector in the region of Regensburg were presented, which the city of Regensburg had commissioned through BioPark Regensburg GmbH. The results unveiled chances and potentials within the growth area of the health care sector (see press release no. 162). One of the recommendations for action of the location analysis was the creation of a "Health Care Sector Masterplan" for the city and the region of Regensburg. The masterplan incorporates both strategic objectives and specific actions in order to boost the purposeful development of the region within the health care sector.
„We started this series of workshops in order to set the cornerstones for the various topics of the “Health Care Sector Masterplan” for the region of Regensburg”, explained Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, CEO of BioPark Regensburg GmbH, where the third workshop took place on Tuesday, 18th of October. Together with the experts from the various stakeholders in the healthcare sector in Regensburg and the region, the contents of the masterplan are developed in the workshops.
While the first workshop at the end of July had its focus on the subject area of "Cell Therapy and Oncology" (see also press release no. 171) and the second workshop focused on "Digitalization / E-Health / Telemedicine / Medical Technology" (see also press release no. 172), the recent third workshop focused on the topic of the “Aging Society”. Once again experts from the university hospital and the various other hospitals, university and research institutions as well as government and administration representatives attended the workshop in order to discuss and align their future vision on how to tackle the challenges linked with an aging society in Regensburg and its surrounding region.
The workshop topics ranged from medical treatment and care to living and mobility. In the context of demographic change as well as an expected shortage of doctors in rural areas, it is of utmost importance for the “Health Care Sector Masterplan” to set a clear signal on how to position Regensburg and the region for this future. During interviews conducted for the location analysis, the stakeholders have emphasized the desire of creating a model region for medical care catering to the needs of an increasingly aging population.
„In the workshops we particularly want to map out the various links and possible synergies existing between the fields of action and the cross-cutting themes which we had identified in the location analysis and which we will use as structure for the masterplan – for example, the synergies and opportunities for medical care and nursing that come along with digitalization and e-health”, mentions Dr. Oliver Müller, author of the location analysis and Partner in the field of Pharma & Health at Detecon International GmbH, who supports the workshops and the process for development of the masterplan with his consulting team. Detecon is a consulting company active worldwide, which unites classical management consulting with great digital technology expertise. As a subsidiary of T-Systems, Detecon is a part of the Telekom Group and merges business and technology perspectives into a consistent digital change journey for its clients.
“The upcoming workshops in November and December will focus on the topics of “Skilled Employees & Training” as well as “Location Marketing & Business Development””, explains Diefenthal. „It is our goal to present the finalized masterplan in the fall of 2017. The document shall contain an overview of the potential as well as initial recommendations for action”, adds Müller. This is also of high interest for the State of Bavaria. The state supports the activities with a project grant for „Promotion of Healthcare in Regensburg/ Cluster” financing the two positions created for this purpose at BioPark Regensburg GmbH as well as materials for the first three years. For one of the positions, Dr. Ilja Hagen has joined the BioPark team as project manager for healthcare since beginning of October (see also press release no. 173).
