The Tumor Center in the BioPark Regensburg on a Path Towards Growth
The Tumorcenter Regensburg e. V. was founded, with support of the Federal Health Ministry, at the University of Regensburg, 12 years ago. Initially, intended as a model project, it was designed to improve oncological care for tumor patients in the Upper Palatinate. The center, under the careful guidance of Prof. Hofstädter (Pathology Institute) and with financial input from health insurance companies, has recorded over 50,000 tumor patient cases from diagnosis up to follow-up treatment. The data has helped to improve treatment analysis, i.e. Chemotherapy and Radiation treatment for specific tumor types for each patient. Specific tumors types are now being researched in individual groups, which are being coordinated by Dr. Klinkhammer-Schalke, since they were established in BioPark in 1998. In the meantime, the staff has grown to 26, who take care of the documentation and the interdisciplinary oncological conferences of which 12 are broadcasted in hospitals for means of tele-medicine. The tele-medicine network in the Upper Palatinate as well as in the Upper and Lower Bavaria has led to better care for cancer patients. The “eEurope award for eHealth - 2003” demonstrates the magnitude of the centers efforts. The European Commission, chose the Tumor Center in Regensburg from among 170 competitors in the field of Health Care. The Tumor Center has just begun a new study on breast cancer patients, which should help increase the number of long term survivors. The study is being supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Consumer Safety (StMGEV) thus emphasizing the important role of tele-medicine in Europe.
