Start of the Regensburg Digital Health Initiative

BioPark Regensburg GmbH, an enterprise of the City of Regensburg, has just recently presented the Healthcare Masterplan (see BioPark PR No. 191, Nov. 2017). The Masterplan denotes opportunities, potentials and recommendations for action for Regensburg and the Region in this field. A specialty subject in the masterplan is digitalization in the health field. In a corresponding workshop the stakeholders expressed the linking and expansion of digital health activities at the location as a recommendation for action. For this purpose the BioPark has founded the Digital Health Initiative Regensburg, which is linking and putting into action the first initiatives within the HealthCare Regensburg Project funded by the State of Bavaria. One of the first initiatives running at the moment is the interdisciplinary company analysis on Health-IT in the Bioregion Regensburg and starting with conducting regular events in Regensburg on this topic.

The start was made by a roadshow on the Medical Data Space Initiative (MedDS) from the Fraunhofer society. Upon invitation from Prof. Dr. Christoph Klein, Field Director of the Fraunhofer Working Group for Personalized Tumor Therapy in Regensburg, regional stakeholders from the Regensburg Research and Healthcare landscape met up, as for example the Regensburg Tumor Centre, the Comprehensive Cancer Center East Bavaria (CCCO) and the Regensburg OTH with professorial chair in informatics and eHealth. Further experts included software developers and representatives from the Medical Data Space Initiative of the Fraunhofer Society. This initiative supports the digital transformation of companies in healthcare and the life sciences field in Germany. Furthermore the 1st Innovation Day on Digitalization in Healthcare took place at the BioPark. With in-practice examples on hand, 75 participants were able to inform themselves at the event about the newest technical options and successful digitalization strategies, brought to concept together with Forum MedTech Pharma e.V.. Potential intelligent sensory technology for healthcare was just as much a theme as acceptability and usability. The goal of creating a platform for exchange by developers and users with the new format was fully realized.

“There was no lack of meaningful solution approaches and fruitful discussions on data security, finance and overcoming sectoral barriers at both events” said Project Director Dr. Ilja Hagen in summary of the start of the series of events. “With the Regensburg Digital Health Initiative we want to try in the next two years to develop regional solution approaches together with the stakeholders on-site and put these into action as far as possible”, highlighted BioPark CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal.
