Sixth Workshop on Health Care Sector
In December 2015 the results of a location analysis on the health care sector in the region of Regensburg were presented, which the city of Regensburg had commissioned through BioPark Regensburg GmbH. The results unveiled chances and potentials within the growth area of the health care sector (see press release no. 162). One of the recommendations for action of the location analysis was the creation of a "Health Care Sector Masterplan" for the city and the region of Regensburg. „In order to set the content cornerstones for the various topics of the masterplan we have set up a workshop series”, explained Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, CEO of BioPark Regensburg GmbH. During the past five workshops, the different topics of "Cell Therapy and Oncology", "Digitalization / E-Health / Telemedicine / Medical Technology", “Aging Society”, “Skilled Professionals & Education“ and “Location Marketing & Economic Development” were discussed (also see press releases no. 171, 172, 174, 179, 181).
For the recent sixth workshop around the key topic “Innovation and Company Founding”, stakeholders from both academic and research institutions as well as from start-up advisory services and economic development met with experienced founders at BioPark (see group picture on page 2). In this context, the two start-up and technology centers of the city of Regensburg – BioPark and TechBase – and their clusters work in close cooperation particularly in the field of digitalization in order to leverage their synergies in the best possible way.
„Looking at the megatrend of digitalization, this could be the main focus for a possible new Innovation Center Healthcare, since digitalization in the health sector bears enormous potentials”, explains Dr. Oliver Müller, author of the location analysis and Partner in the field of Pharma & Health at Detecon International GmbH, who supports the workshops and the process for development of the masterplan with his consulting team. Detecon is a worldwide active consulting company, which unites classical management consulting with great digital technology expertise. As a subsidiary of T-Systems, Detecon is a part of the Telekom Group and merges business and technology perspectives into a consistent digital change journey for its clients.
The participants of the workshop have discussed the strengths and potentials in Regensburg regarding innovation, company founding and the establishment of new companies in the region. Just like in the previous workshops, they collected a variety of inputs for the masterplan, especially contributing their thoughts and ideas regarding the positioning of a possible “Innovation Center Healthcare”. It is one of the recommendations in the location analysis to evaluate establishing such an incubator on the campus.
„Now it is time to review the results of the six workshops and refine the contents of the masterplan in close exchange with the involved stakeholders to be able to consolidate the inputs into a strategy paper”, said Dr. Diefenthal explaining the next steps. “The masterplan will unveil important action plans and project ideas for the further development of the health care sector in the Regensburg region – thus the ‘Landkreis’ as well as the BioRegio Regensburg in Eastern Bavaria are closely involved”, mentioned Dieter Daminger, Councilor for Economic, Financial and Research Affairs of the City of Regensburg.
“It is our goal to present the finalized masterplan in the fall of 2017. The document shall contain an overview of the potential as well as initial recommendations for action”, adds Dr. Ilja Hagen, who has joined the BioPark team as project manager for healthcare since the beginning of October 2016 (see also press release no. 173). This is also of high interest for the Free State of Bavaria. The state supports the activities with a project grant for “Promotion of Healthcare in Regensburg / Cluster” financing the two positions created for this purpose at BioPark Regensburg GmbH as well as associated materials for the first three years.
