Second Sustainability Fact Sheet for BioPark Regensburg GmbH

(No. 282) In 2022, the BioPark carried out a focused analysis of sustainabilty aspects for the first time and published the first sustainability fact sheet 2022/23 in 2023. The second fact sheet 2024/25 shows which further measures we have taken to advance the theme of sustainability.

In September 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the UN Summit in New York. The core of the agenda is made up of 17 goals, the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The agenda creates the basis for enabling all people worldwide to live a life of dignity and for shaping economic progress in harmony with social justice and within the ecological limits of the earth.

In July 2021, the German Association of Cities, the City of Regensburg and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) signed a model resolution to commit themselves to implementing the sustainability goals of Agenda 2030 at local level. In summer 2022, BioPark Regensburg GmbH, an enterprise of the city of Regensburg, started the first inventory and analysis of sustainability aspects of the operating company. An assessment with Bayern Innovativ GmbH as part of a funding program of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) showed that the BioPark is already above average in terms of sustainability in many areas and also has interesting potential for improvement (see press release no. 262, August 2022).

To further advance the theme and offer a central contact person for clients and partners, Dr. Alexandra Sauter, doctorate in human sciences and project manager at BioPark, was appointed the company's sustainability officer.

In the first sustainability fact sheet 2022/23, we were able to report in detail on measures to save electricity through photovoltaic systems and the complete replacement of light sources with LED technology and the CO2 compensation of business trips and electromobility.

The second sustainability report 2024/25 focuses on the further expansion of electromobility, the expansion of central waste disposal to increase the circular economy and the opening of the BioPark campus trail for outdoor training.

"In addition to the BioPark as an operating company, the content-related activities in cluster management also offer a lot of scope for further development," explained BioPark Managing Director Dr. Thomas Diefenthal. For example, the company Numares AG (diagnostics) based in the BioPark and the BioRegio company Cfm Oskar Tropitzsch GmbH (sales of research reagents) have also undergone an initial sustainability assessment. Other companies such as PAN Biotech GmbH have already implemented sustainable systems with the involvement of clients with the “Green your lab” campaign and presented them at trade fairs such as Analytica.
