Research alliance in immunology starts up in North Bavaria
With the signing of the cooperation agreement, the presidents of the three universities announced together with the Bavarian Minister of Science Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch the go-ahead for the new research alliance in immunology. The research group has the goal, through close collaboration of top research at all three universities, to make the development of new immunotherapies more efficient and put innovative therapies more quickly into use. The fields of application in immunology range from cancer and infectious diseases to rheumatology and diabetes, organ and stem cell transplantation. The treatment of individual patients calls for tailor-made medications, the manufacture of which requires individualised cleanroom laboratories. At all three locations a high degree of scientific competence has been built up for this purpose in the last few years and the most modern of infrastructure has been invested in. The universities are concentrating on different specialties in immunology, but on those which will complement each other, such as translational immunology in Erlangen-Nürnberg, interventional immunology in Regensburg and system immunology in Würzburg. Patients will benefit most from the networking. In many types of cancer or in transplants the necessity to suppress the immune system has to date been linked with strong side effects. The development of improved or completely new therapies can give these patients back a large piece of quality of life.
