Regensburg companies support the fight against Corona
The companies and institutes at BioPark Regensburg, an enterprise of the City of Regensburg, as well as the companies in the Bioregion Regensburg Cluster were already active in part as experts in the field of hygiene and treatment for example of multiresistant pathogens before the Corona crisis. “This experience and the products on hand can now also be used in the fight against the Corona pandemic”, explained BioPark CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal.
The company TriOptoTec GmbH at the BioPark has developed an innovative antimicrobial coating which also has an antiviral effect. The novel non-poisonous catalyst based on vitamins and protective substances derived from plants is in the position of absorbing energy from the visible surrounding light and transferring oxygen. This activated oxygen has an antibacterial, antiviral and antimycotic effect. This self pathogen removing coating has already been applied at the Regensburg Hospital and the BioPark Buildings on frequently used surfaces such as door handles, light switches and railings to support hygiene measures. “At the moment we are receiving lots of enquiries and contracts to equip companies and public transport with our product”, explained CEO Xaver Auer.
The Regensburg company RAS AG has developed a new generation of additives based on nanosilver. These are manufactured to medical quality standard and have been distributed for 20 years to combat multiresistant bacteria and viruses in a multitude of applications. The technology is licensed worldwide. For the short-term support of Bavarian hospitals RAS AG is making its capacities freely available and is producing formulas for hand and surface disinfection.
The company relyon plasma GmbH, a subsidiary of TDK Electronics AG, uses innovative plasma technology for the disinfection and sterilization of surfaces. Currently developments are underway to also be able to use these for rapid hand sanitization, which could counteract a lack of hand sanitization products.
In the field of diagnostics Regensburg nal von minden GmbH has developed a quick test to prove the presence of antibodies to the Corona virus and put this onto the market. In the near future this specialist will also be able to make an antigen test for in-vitro diagnostics available.
Companies from the region are also supporting the fight against Corona virus with the development of treatments. The companies Cfm Oskar Tropitzsch GmbH and Iris Biotech GmbH from Marktredwitz are working on the research of a new antiviral substance against SARS viruses which Corona belongs to and are already in close contact with leading research institutes. Furthermore Cfm Oskar Tropitzsch GmbH is in the value-added chain of a large diagnostic company and is supporting it in the securing of raw materials for these test kits.
The theme of hygiene has been developing into a point of specialty in the Healthcare Regensburg Project in recent years. “Currently in the hygiene working circle representatives from over 10 universities, hospitals and companies in the Regensburg area have actively come together to develop the theme further at the location”, emphasized Project Manager Dr. Hagen. Because hygiene protects and saves lives which is becoming extremely evident in the times of the Corona.
