New School for Bio-tech Assistants
The communal vocational school for BTA in Straubing was opened a as public institution. The Vocational School Association of Straubing-Bogen, a special purpose association, whose members are from Straubing and the district of Straubing-Bogen, manage the school. The general and theoretical instruction is carried out in a school in Straubing, which has also appointed a school director. The practical instruction is done in laboratories in the Research Center of the TU Munich, which are also located in Straubing. Furthermore, there is also the opportunity for information exchange with the Competence Center for Re-generating Raw-materials and the Development and Technology Center.
The research director of the school is Prof. Robert Huber, Chair of Microbiology at the University of Regensburg. Prof. Huber was a long time research partner of Prof. Stetter, who made dramatic discoveries in the research of micro-organisms and was founder of the internationally successful Diversa Corp. in San Diego, USA. Eighty applicants from all over Germany applied for the 20 spots at the BTA-School. The top 20 are currently taking part in the two year training program, in which they will, among other things, complete two 4-week internships at companies, universities, clinics or research institutions. This affords companies, who are interested in hiring candidates, a first impression of future employees. Companies who offer internships have first pick when choosing new employees for a vacant position.
