New Biomedical Technology Center starts in Regensburg
The Bioregion Regensburg has often been an incubator for interdisciplinary projects. For several years competencies in medical IT and medical engineering have developed between researchers from various tertiary faculties and medicine. Since the winter semester 2008/09 it has been possible to study a bachelor degree in medical IT at Regensburg University and since the summer semester 2011 biomedical engineering - both degrees are held within the faculty of medicine. The graduates of these degrees are then qualified for work at the interface of medicine and IT or engineering. The specialised degrees satisfy demand from industry and research according to experts in their core fields, which can be used in the complex medical landscape. To promote the research the Regensburg Center of Biomedical Engineering (RCBE) has been set up, an institution spanning faculties and tertiary education for Regensburg. It will move its laboratory premises and its business headquarters to BioPark Regensburg and its own building once completed. In the RCBE the research competencies of the new specialty fields will be linked together. Specialty topics are the analysis of medical data, biomechanics, medical information systems (eHealth), implantology and instrument engineering for medical technology. The RCBE has an open structure capable of expansion, which associates with further interdisciplinary institutions in Regensburg such as the Sensory Technology Applications Center or the Mechatronics Research Unit.
