Inactivating Corona Viruses in Air in Rooms – Made in Regensburg
Winter is just around the corner and presents huge challenges in heating public institutions, doctors’ practices or schools with the regular airing required due to Corona virus. Specialists on the matter are currently recommending consistent airing every 30 minutes for 10 minutes so that air passes through to reduce possible infectious aerosols. An innovative idea from Regensburg could create aid here for the future.
UV light has already been used for a long time for example for removing bacteria from water plants, such as in the sterile ring piping of completely desalinated water at BioPark Regensburg. How does it work? The UV light produced by the sun is divided into 3 subgroups: UV-A radiation (400-315nm) and UV-B radiation (315-280nm) reach Earth and cause the skin to brown or to become sunburnt. The greater proportion of vitamin D that people need for their health is formed via the skin. UV-B radiation is needed for this. UV-C radiation (280-100nm) is absorbed by the ozone layer for the protection of all living beings as this range in wavelength destroys the DNA of all microorganisms.
LI-EX GmbH from the Regensburg Bioregion, has developed a room air purifier which with the aid of UV-C light kills of 99.9% of microorganisms. With the most effective wavelength 253.7nm viruses, bacteria, yeasts and molds hanging in the air are rendered harmless without any ozone being able to arise that is harmful to the environment or our health. The risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2 and the entire flu viruses in rooms is thereby considerably reduced. The extremely quiet special ventilators can clean 70m³ of air within an hour. That corresponds to a room size of 25m² with a ceiling height of 2.8m. According to the size of the room or its construction several devices can be used with the most diverse variations in montage. Li-Ex GmbH deliberately does not use filters requiring intensive servicing and constructs long-life and high quality UV-C lighting material from the company Osram (9,000 hours of use).
In keeping with the same principle the company also has developed a UV-C conveyor belt bacteria removal system and a respiratory mask.
