10 years Council of German BioRegions
With the BioRegion Competition from the Ministry for Education and Research (bmbf) the foundations were laid in 1996 for many German cluster initiatives in the field of biotechnology. The BioRegion Regensburg also arose from this, and from which BioPark Regensburg GmbH followed in 1999. In 2004 17 bioregions met for the first time for an internal exchange of experiences in Leipzig to discuss important topics on foundation and advancement of biotech companies. Today AK BioRegio represents with its 30 members, as an established institution, the regional initiatives to advance the business implementation of modern biotechnologies in Germany. It has its headquarters at BIO Deutschland in Berlin.
Since 2007 AK BioRegio has initiated yearly the innovation prize for the German BioRegions, a countrywide competition for application-oriented ideas from tertiary institutions. Since 2010 it has directed the German Biotechnology Days, the annual meeting in Germany for those in this field. Here the AK-BioRegion works together with important partners, such as Ernst & Young (German Biotechnology Report) or Germany Trade & Invest (location marketing). “The AK BioRegion is perceived today as an independent and competent industry expert for biotechnology in Germany“, said Dr. Diefenthal summarising the 10 years of work together.
