Healthcare Regensburg with New Project Funding

The project “Masterplan – Healthcare Regensburg” was about with which means Regensburg and the region could use opportunities and increase potentials that exist in the field of healthcare. This was commenced at the end of 2016 by BioPark Regensburg GmbH with support of the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs. Initially to be able to fulfill the wishes of all stakeholders for a common visibility for the healthcare location the new brand “Healthcare Regensburg” was created. The initial recommendations for action and project suggestions for further development of healthcare at the Regensburg location and in the region were established in the masterplan presented at the end of 2017 (see BioPark PR. No. 191, Nov. 2017). An assessment conducted in 2019 demonstrated an increase in the number of employees by 26% in healthcare since the last count in 2011 and also laid out the role of the industry as a “job motor” for the region. In 2018, a total of more than 20,000 social insurance employees worked in the health industry in the Region of Regensburg.

Several projects have already been put into action by Healthcare Regensburg. This is how “Digital Health Initiative” was started whose activities in the digitalization of providing medical care are linked, supported and further developed. An opportunity was thereby also created for the network stakeholders to present themselves with their own shared stands at national and international trade fairs. To promote the startup of innovative companies in healthcare the BioPark brought to life the “Healthcare Accelerator - BioPark Jump”. With the interdisciplinary linking between IT and health the BioPark has been working closely with its subsidiary company at TechBase and the Digital start-up campaign in Upper Palatinate. The Healthcare Regensburg Initiative concept has been convincing for the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. It is supporting putting new innovative projects into action for three years until the end of 2022.

“The Healthcare Regensburg Initiative is a successful further development using several location analyses with all of the stakeholders for further model-like development at the BioParks”, explained CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal. Thereby the BioPark, as an enterprise of the City of Regensburg and a component of the municipal business funding, has set standards for the life sciences and healthcare industry in the region. Together with the Regensburg universities and companies in the region sustainable innovation, translation and transfer has been practiced at the location. In the current funding phase further specialty measures in the masterplan are to be put into action. Since the beginning of 2019, and due to the acute current Corona situation, the Hygiene Working Group has been active and held its first successful innovation day on hygiene in Regensburg (see BioPark PR No. 228, March 2020). “In addition to the already established innovation days on caregiving and hygiene, we are going to build up further working groups, for example on the theme of robotics in in-patient and out-patient care”, expanded Project Manager Dr. Ilja Hagen. A cluster conference is also in planning for Healthcare Regensburg to present what has been put into action from the masterplan and to expand further impulses from the stakeholders in healthcare, research and administration at the location.
