Foundation stone laid for 3rd construction in Regensburg
With the festive laying of the foundation stone at the University Campus, BioPark Regensburg is further on the course towards success. Following the opening of BioPark I in 2001 and BioPark II in 2006, with the completion of BioPark III in 2011 the Foundation and Technology Centre in Regensburg will comprise 18.000 m2 of highly modern laboratory production and office space. In this jubilee year Lord Mayor Hans Schaidinger outlined the success story of the last 10 years. In 1999 the region had 23 companies from the “life sciences” field with ca. 400 employees. Today there are 40 companies providing 2,600 jobs, so a good 6 times more than 10 years ago. This is above all due to the successful development of the companies and of the network of BioRegio Regensburg. Today in the field of biotechnology, it is the second largest competency network in Bavaria. This network has also been crowned a successful competitor by the federal initiative Competency Networks Germany in 2006.
Bavarian Minister Martin Zeil announced: “Biotechnology is an important industry segment for the future with superlative importance for Bavaria as a business location. So it is all the more gratifying that the City of Regensburg has consistently been in engaged in biotechnology for many years. The reward is constant, successful development of biotech companies in the region. The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs has sustained support for this course of direction, including the promotion of BioPark III.”
To date thanks to the BioPark 33 new company foundations could be accompanied and federal funding of 24.5 million € conveyed. In the same period of time a total of 216 million € was invested in the biotechnology companies of the region, of this101.6 million € in venture capital alone.
The Managing Director Dr. Thomas Diefenthal and Councillor for Economic Financial Affairs Dieter Daminger emphasised that without the constant growth of the successful companies in the BioPark and of the Region, of the consequent promotion of start-up companies and new locations of companies in Regensburg, this success would not have been possible. For this the BioPark was awarded “Selected Location 2008” in the German competition “Land of Ideas”.
