Diabetes Project in Bavaria starts with LipoFIT as Partner
Together with “The Biobank of Blood Donors“ founded in 2006, the Bavarian Red Cross with now 4 million samples is participating currently in several research projects for the early recognition of disease. The blood samples from this biobank are particularly suited to the researching of biomarkers, which arise in an early stage of a disease. In the currently until now largest research project, new testing methods should be developed for the early recognition of diabetes.
Eight million Germans suffer currently from diabetes and the rate of increase of new disease amounts to 5 % annually. With total cost of treatment per year at currently 15 billion €, diabetes is a classic disease of the population.
LipoFIT GmbH, as "spin off" of the University of Regensburg and founded in 2004, has developed into the leading supplier of industrial NMR analysis for the medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. Nuclear magnetic resonance is a modern spectroscopic method based on the measurable interaction of atomic nuclei with a magnetic field. This method is particularly suited to the rapid and exact analysis of biological fluids, such as blood and the macromolecules with in the blood. LipoFIT searches for markers in the blood plasma samples of the biobank, which allow detection of the onset of diabetes in the future.
With this method type 2 diabetes (diabetes of older age) should be detected earlier, which often remains long undetected, as the effected patients themselves demonstrate no symptomatology, whilst irreversible damage is occurring in the body.
