Current On-Site Study in Bioregion Regensburg
It is no secret that the German Biotechnology Industry is in a state of consolidation. In this phase the 2nd construction stage of the BioPark in Regensburg is nearing completion; the first building is almost 100% occupied. So what kind of further developments can we expect to see in the region? This question is to be pursued by the study, which was commissioned by the State of Bavaria and the City of Regensburg. A pioneer in the area of consulting for the German biotechnology scene was contracted for this. Capgemini guided the BioRegio Competition in 1995 in which the BioRegio Regensburg also participated. In the Federal BioProfile Competition of 2001 Capgemini also had the Region Regensburg under its care. Above all the current study demonstrates the successful development from 1999 to 2004, during which time the number of pure Biotech companies more than doubled from 11 to 29 (with only 3 insolvencies). As regional medical technology and analysis are linked in multiple ways to local biotechnology, 41 companies with their 1104 employees active in the area of "Life Sciences" in the BioRegio Regensburg contribute to the regional biotechnology cluster at this time. So the Region of Regensburg has developed into the second largest biotechnology area in Bavaria following Munich. The study sees the greatest growth potential in the future for the BioRegio Regensburg in forming regional interdisciplinary links to the local glass, telecommunication, microelectronics, raw material technology, engineering and automobile industries. Initial steps have already been commenced with the formation of a strategic partnership with Sensorik in Regensburg. Additionally further activity in the founding of companies in the area of Life Sciences from the Universities is to be expected.
