The number of biotechnology companies (core biotech definition according to CapGemini Consulting) has slightly decreased in comparison to the previous year from 27 to 26 companies (-1). The number of biotech employees dropped slightly from 896 to 882 (-1.5%). The total number of life science companies rose slightly from 44 companies in the previous year to 45 companies (+1). The total number of employees on the reporting date 31.12.2011 was significantly higher at 2,956 than in the previous year with 2,571 employees (+13%). This pleasing development was pointed out by managing director Dr. Thomas Diefenthal at the presentation of the new financial report on the development of the BioRegio Regensburg Cluster.
In the financial year 2011 the business office registered the departure of a company (Hyglos). In contrast there was a start up company (2bind), a settlement of a company (Novapura) and an entry to the cluster (Pharma Stulln). 2bind GmbH was founded from the University of Regensburg as a service provider company in the field of diagnostics. Swiss company Novapura AG, a leading company in hygiene, is driving its research and development laboratories for new products in the BioPark. Furthermore Pharma Stulln from the area of the same name - Stulln in Upper Palatinate – was acquired by BioRegio Regensburg. Also not to mention the circle of interdisciplinary companies with life science projects in the cluster was able to expand with the Regensburg company aquagroup AG to 11 companies.
In the BioPark itself there are currently 32 leaseholders with 555 employees. Following the opening of the third construction phase in September 2011, there is a gross area of 18,000 m2 in three buildings, of this 14,800 m2 available as leasable floor space and lecture theatres, conference and events areas. In addition to the life science companies, the centre is enriched by service providers (patent lawyers, accountancy and tax consultancy, coaching & personal services, statistics and clinical studies), a childcare facility, university and external university institutions (University Technology Transfer and Competence Centre, Fraunhofer Working Groups).
