Current figures on the Healthcare Industry in Regensburg

The technology consultancy company Detecon International GmbH was contracted by the BioPark to carry out a recent survey of the number of employees in the City and Regensburg Region in the field of pharma and health. To do this 9 so-called WZ-codes (classification and systems of industry branches) from the healthcare field were evaluated. In 2018 this showed a total of 19,683 employees with social security in the healthcare industry in the Region of Regensburg. That is a good 26 % more than at the last count in 2011. 80 % of these are in the City of Regensburg and 20 % in the Region of Regensburg. With 10,955 employees almost half of these work in the 5 hospitals in the City and the Region. Here the number of employees rose by even 26 % in comparison to 2011. In the area of local doctors there were 3,894 employees at last count, an increase around 32 %. Also in inpatient and outpatient care the number of employees rose from 26% to 3,892.

The German healthcare industry produced at last count with 348 billion € around 12% of gross domestic product *. This corresponds approximately to every eight € of gross domestic product. It is concurrently an employer of 7.3 million people in Germany, which is every 6th work place. The healthcare industry is a job motor and has created 1.4 million positions in Germany in the last 10 years, an increase of almost 19%.  The Mayor of the City of Regensburg, Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer, who is also Chairperson of the Advisory Board of BioPark Regensburg GmbH, thanks Detecon Consulting and the BioPark Team for this current location analysis. “Just this over proportional increase of employee numbers in healthcare by 26% in only seven years in the City and the Region compared to the federal average of 19 % in ten years shows that we are going in the right direction to securing the future of the location.”

Dipl.-Vw. Dieter Daminger, Consultant for Economy, Science and Finance to the City of Regensburg with additional position as CFO at the BioPark highlighted; “The marked increase of the total number of employees in approximately 831 operations in the healthcare field in the City and the Region documents the increasing economic significance of this industry for the Regensburg location.” The consistent expansion for example of the hospitals and research institutes, medical centers and rest homes also contributes to this development. Daminger emphasized the role of the BioPark as an important nucleus for science in the location. In this way the BioPark makes space available for long term settlement of external university research institutions such as RCI-ITEM, Fraunhofer ITEM, Field for Personalized Tumor Therapy and the RCBE Regensburg Center of Biomedical Engineering and RCHST Regensburg Center of Health Sciences and Technology.

The Project Team surrounding BioPark CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal and Project Manager Dr. Ilja Hagen sees further potential in the brand “Healthcare Regensburg – managed by BioPark”. “The coming together of the increasing lack of a specialized workforce, the increase of regional research projects and the increasing number of startup ideas in the healthcare field are already strengthening the sustainability of the Regensburg technology location today”. The demographic change will also not pass by the young student city of Regensburg. We can also count on strong growth in this industry in the future. BioPark Regensburg GmbH is also making a considerable contribution as a company to the City of Regensburg by securing innovative strength in the location in this field.
