Current Business Report 2010 for BioRegio Regensburg

The number of biotechnology companies (core biotech definition according to CapGemini Consulting) has sunk slightly in comparison the previous year from 28 to 27 companies (-1). However the number of biotech employees has risen slightly from 869 to 896 (+3.1%). The total number of life science companies rose slightly in comparison to the previous year from 42 to 44 (+2). The total number of employees at the cut-off date of 31.12.2010 stood at 2,571, a little over the previous year with 2,503 employees (+2,7%). Facing 2 insolvencies there was the establishment of 2 new companies and 2 acquired companies, predominantly from the field of medical technology, explained CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal. In BioPark Regensburg itself there are currently 28 leaseholders with 547 employees on site. BioPark I and II are completely booked out. The third construction phase underway right now will provide relief, which will come into action in September of this year and increase the total area by 6,000 m2 to a total of 18,000 m2. The 14.5 million € building project will be carried out as part of the economic stimulus programme of the Federal Government with the support of the State of Bavaria, the City of Regensburg and the European Union. 50% of the space has already been allotted, partly for expanding companies on site, partly for newly established companies and service providers, including a long awaited child care facility and two patent lawyers from Munich, who would like to open a second subsidiary in the Regensburg BioPark.
