Current Business Report 2009 for BioRegio Regensburg

The number of biotechnology companies (as defined by CapGemini Consulting), in comparison to the previous year, rose from 27 to 29 due to a start-up company and the location of a company to the region. However, the number of Biotech employees dropped from 1047 to 869, a direct reaction of certain companies to the crisis. Despite these uncertain times, in most companies the number of employees remained constant; a few even increased their workforce. In the field of the so-called “Life Sciences” (Life Sciences = Biotechnology, Medical Technology, Diagnostics, Analytics), a total of 42 companies with 2.503 employees were active in the BioRegio Regensburg Technology Cluster in East Bavaria on 31.12.2009 - the day of the turning of the turf. In comparison to the previous year with a total of 2586 employees, a slight reduction is evident, mainly due to the reduction of workforce numbers which occurred in the course of the insolvency/takeover of Schmack Biogas. In BioPark Regensburg itself there are currently 25 companies with 458 employees on site. BioPark I and II are essentially fully leased. Remedial action will lead to the successful completion of the third construction phase, which is currently underway. The 14.5 million € construction project will be completed in conjunction with the Federal Government Business Program with the support of the State of Bavaria, the City of Regensburg and the European Union. From 2010 onwards, BioPark III will have a further 6.000 m2 of high quality laboratory, production and office space available. The infrastructure for the leaseholders will also be improved by this project. In addition to separate conference room, a child day care facility will be erected purposely built for employees of BioPark companies. The Order of St John has already commenced a working group for this purpose. This year too will not be an easy one for the companies. Nevertheless the Managing Director of the BioPark, Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, anticipates growth in some companies and further start-up companies. A third of the space in BioPark III has already been leased 1 year prior to the move-in date.
