Current business report 2008 for BioRegio Regensburg
The number of biotechnology companies (definition according to CapGemini Consulting) is with 27
companies at the level of the previous year near stable. The number of biotech employees has risen from 896 to 1,047. Foundation and dissolution of companies is in the balance. The growth is attributable to the successful development of established companies. In the field of the so-called “life sciences“ (life sciences = biotechnology, medical technology, diagnostics, analysis) 40 companies with 2,586 employees were active in the technology cluster at BioRegio Regensburg in East Bavaria up to 31.12.2008.
Still in 2009 the commencement of building the third construction phase (BioPark Ill) on the
University of Regensburg campus is planned to go ahead to create further space for the successful development of life sciences in Regensburg/East Bavaria. Dr. Thomas Diefenthal has extended his contract as managing director of BioPark Regensburg GmbH by a further five years. Since April 1999 Dr. Diefenthal has been responsible for, in addition to the construction and running of BioPark I and II, the cluster management of BioRegio Regensburg. In the last 10 years he accompanied the foundation of 33 companies and helped to acquire 128 million € in funding and 101 million € in venture capital. He is a jury and coach member in the Businessplan Competitions and active as a consultant investor for the region. Since 2004 he has been a representative spokesperson for The Council of Bioregions in Germany and since 2009 second spokesperson for The Council of German Bioparks. A particular interest he holds is the interdisciplinary collaboration and networking of the region in the field of life sciences.
