Center for Medical Biotechnology Opens at BioPark

The new competence center in BioPark was officially opened by the Bavarian Finance Minister, Dr. Otto Wiesheu. He emphasized that the Center for Medical Biotechnology was not only important for Regensburg, but for all of Bavaria as well; a center of this kind was absolutely unique for Bavaria. The new center is past of a profile expansion of the university and the BioRegio Regensburg and is self-supported. Researchers at Regensburg clinics have been working in the field via their various disciplines for years. Whether synthetic corneas (Eye clinic), reconstructive surgery for accident and tumor patients (HNO Throat-Nose-Ear clinic), bone replacement for tooth implants or the repairing of knee caps with cartilage cell transplants, these techniques are soon to become commonplace in the field of regenerative medicine. Even companies in BioPark Regensburg like Si4Health GmbH specialize in tissue engineering and the development and marketing of state-of-the-art cell carrier materials for all types of tissue replacement for wounds and large surface burns. (See BioPark press release, June 2004 ).
The center is the second of its kind in BioPark. The Competence Center for Fluorescent Bioanalysis opened two years ago and has already had a positive experience in combining “know-how’s” under one roof. In addition to research, the new center intends to develop firms to market the results and the BioRegio will continue to distinguish itself. A workgroup consisting of companies, universities and the city is currently working to found a Center for Sensor Technology in addition, a Center for Proteomics is also planned for Regensburg.
