BioRegio Regensburg in China and Canada
Qingdao, with a population of 2.5 million, is one of the most important port cities on the East Coast of China in Shandong Province. In addition to being the third largest port in the world, the city is also an historical cultural city, where buildings of Wilhelm-style architecture are still to be found from the time of the German occupation (1897-1914). 15 representatives from businesses, the University and the City formed contacts and led one-to-one discussions in the course of the delegation trip. Prof. Hans Wolf from the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene of the University of Regensburg and BioPark Managing Director Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, both from BioRegio Regensburg, visited the Qingdao Medical University and the newly inaugurated Qingdao Municipal Hospital. The State of Bavaria supports its own office in Qingdao (Shandong Office), which can be used by companies of the region (see below).
Since 1989 the State of Bavaria has maintained cooperation with the Province of Québec in Canada in the areas of politics, business, science and research, technology, education and culture and also has its own office in Montreal (Québec Office, see below) for this purpose. The metropolis Montréal, less than 1000 km von New York, is the fifth largest centre worldwide for new technology. This and its position in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, the USA and Mexico makes the Province of Québec the ideal location to become active in the North American Market (400 million consumers). Montreal with 475 companies and 150 private and university research organisations is one of the leading “Life Science” clusters in North America. Prof. Peter Oefner from the Institute for Functional Genomics at the University of Regensburg, Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, Managing Director of BioPark Regensburg GmbH and also the companies Iris Biotech GmbH, CFM Oskar Tropitzsch and Geneart Inc. from BioRegio Regensburg were present. Geneart AG has already successfully formed a subsidiary in Toronto, Canada.
