BioPark Regensburg gets silver again
The BioPark Regensburg GmbH, an enterprise of the City of Regensburg, is the management organization for the innovative cluster “Bioregion Regensburg”. The region in East Bavaria currently comprises 51 companies and 3,851 employees from the field of life sciences (see figure 1). In 1996 it was one of the first bioregions in Germany and also certified as one of the first regions by the “European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI)”.
In a one day audit a total of 31 qualitative categories were examined, for example strategic delivery, cluster structure, financing and goals reached to date. In particular the consistent and sustainable development of the cluster was emphasized. What started with the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry was expanded step by step to medical technology, diagnostics and analytics. Furthermore the cluster was expanded with so-called associated interdisciplinary companies from the fields of the paper, metal and glass industries to a total of 65 companies. Parallel to this, facility management of the BioPark, today with three buildings and the startup and cooperation platform, was built up in a goal-oriented manner.
In the analysis particular emphasis was placed on the current further development in the field of healthcare. Here not only new companies and startup ideas were addressed, but also the regional hospitals were brought into the picture. These have exemplary networks with the Regensburg Universities and complement the cluster in an ideal manner. “We see the award as representing all stakeholders in the entire Regensburg Bioregion”, commented BioPark CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal on receiving the award again. “Without the dynamic action and the cooperative input of the partners of the cluster, the success of BioPark Regensburg GmbH would not have been possible”.
Equally mentioned worthy of praise was that the BioPark as an instrument of municipal economic funding had promoted the transparency of the business and science location in the field of life sciences internationally. For example the BioPark Homepage portrays the Unicampus and its surroundings in detail and in two languages, where today 50,000 people including students, employees, patients and visitors are on the move. Also the further development of the cluster around the brand Healthcare Regensburg was praised. The Masterplan Healthcare Regensburg was extremely impressive in convincing the experts in the field of strategy building processes and documentation of the cluster strategy.
Also beyond the life sciences the Regensburg/East Bavarian Region is currently underway with successful cluster politics. At the moment there are five active clusters here, certified with the ECEI silver label. Of these four alone are located in both municipal technology and startup centers BioPark and TechBase.
