BioPark Regensburg at BioBrasil 2006
The State of Bavaria has maintained strong relationships with Brazil for a long period of time. The trade volumes of the Bavarian company with the country have been up to 1 billion Euros according to latest figures, with Bavaria exceeding a trade balance of 473 million Euros. This places Brazil in first place as the most important trade partner for Bavaria in Latin America. This was concurrently emphasized by Secretary of State Hans Spitzner at the delegation trip to Brazil from 17th - 25th Oct. 2006. In 2004 the BioRegions BioM (Munich) and BioRegio Regensburg signed a cooperation agreement with BioRegion Biominas in Belo Horizonte to work more closely in the area of biotechnology. Minas Gerais is the fifth largest state in Brazil with 16 million inhabitants. The capital Belo Horizonte is the third largest metropolis in Brazil and one of the richest industrial areas in the country. In 1990 the bioregion Fundação Biominas was founded, one of the largest biotechnology regions in Brazil, currently with 58 biotechfirms. With the organisation AL-INVEST, it succeeded in organising one of the partnerships financed by the EU within congress between German and Latin American firms, in which BioPark Regensburg, Metabion GmbH of Munich and Biocam GmbH of Regensburg took part. BioRegio Regensburg was already maintaining cooperation with two companies in Brazil. The Regensburg company BioGents GmbH has entered a joint venture with the Brazilian company ECOVEC Ltda. in Belo Horizonte. ITMS Deutschland GmbH of Regensburg has founded a subsidiary, ITMS do Brasil Ltda in Uberlândia, Brazil. The economy in Brazil in recent years has become enormously dynamic. Brazil is currently the tenth largest national economy in the world.
