BioPark Guest in the US Partner City Tempe

Tempe is located in the extended city area of Phoenix (4 million inhabitants) and has held a city partnership since 1978 with Regensburg. The city is with its population of 172,000 of similar size to the cathedral city and part of an extensive biotech-network in Arizona. Here alone there are 1,382 companies with approximately 106,846 employees. The Arizona State University (ASU) with 90,000 students is the largest university in America. 48,000 alone are studying on the university campus in Tempe. The Regensburg delegation visited the Biodesign Institute at the ASU in Tempe, which is planning for four construction stages on a total area of 80,000 m2. The first two construction stages  with 17,000 m2 respectively were put into operation in 2004 and 2006 and employ today 600 coworkers. The masterplan intends that on the one hand the University will realise in the next few years two further construction stages for the Science Biodesign Center and on the other hand the building of a privately financed Biomedical Technology Campus on leasehold property in the City of Tempe for companies in the field of the life sciences. The delegation met up with  representatives from the ASU and  the Arizona Bioindustry Association (AZBio) and discussed further links for collaboration within the city alliance.
