BioPark enthuses young girls on "Girls´ Day"
With round 8,000 events for more than 135,000 participants, the seventh Girls' Day – Day for Girls’ futures – was the most successful to date in Germany. On an interactive day held annually throughout the country, girls were able to discover for themselves professional fields in technology, skilled trades, natural sciences and information technology. The BioPark in Regensburg, together with the University of Regensburg and the company Profos AG, invited girls to get to know the exciting professional field of biotechnology on this interactive day. Over 100 girls from school year 6 to 10 could gain information about this highly innovative branch of the future by attending lectures and film presentations, a tour of the technology in house and the laboratories of the Competence Centre for Fluorescent Bioanalysis. With experiments and a practical presentation on bacteria, the young researchers were able to experience everyday life in the laboratory and enquire about possible job training/education and career prospects from the advisors. More and more girls find the way to their profession and training/education for this through Girls' Day. Meanwhile more than every fifth participating company receives applications from participants at Girls' Day. Also the number of women studying biology and medicine is increasing. Girls' Day is supported by the Ministry for Education and Research, the Ministry for Families, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as well as by funding from the European Social Fund and supported by other institutions (see Internet site).
