Analysis : „Medical Technology in Bavaria 2015“
In contract from Forum MedTech Pharma e.V. the consulting company CONSULTIC has analysed the company structure, products and key services, the turnover and the employment rates, the export behaviour and the expected developments and trends of the Bavarian companies. The result of the 32 page study shows that medtech is one of the most important innovation and economy motors in the State of Bavaria. In total there are just on 1,000 companies as manufacturers, suppliers and service providers for medtech in the state. These have been mainly founded since the start of the 90s. Together these companies generate almost 15 billion € in turnover.
The Bavarian medtech industry offers approx. 80,000 people a job directly or indirectly. Almost 9 of 10 positions are taken by employees paying social security – with an upward trend. The export of medtech products makes up a large proportion of the total turnover. Approximately two thirds of the production – measured by turnover – are determined for export. The most important target regions include other EU countries, the USA and China.

Progressive digitalization and networking are regarded as important technological trends. The influence of Asia is seen both as risk and opportunity through the rising pressure of prices and competition as well as development of new markets there. Bavarian medtech companies are content with their location.
The future development of the industry and its own companies is seen as very positive. The location with top class medical clinical infrastructure combines in a unique way "hard" location factors such as a high service spectrum in patient care with "soft" location factors: around 400 accredited acute hospitals, 58,000 doctors, 11,000 dentists, 285 care or rehabilitation institutes, 62 health spas and resorts.
