An Innovation Prize for the BioRegions goes to Regensburg

The German BioRegions are the regional initiatives for the promotion of commercial use of modern biotechnologies in Germany. The Council of the BioRegions (abbreviated AK-BioRegio) is the central network of meanwhile 30 regional initiatives in Germany. For the seventh time AK-BioRegio gave awards for the three most innovative and patented research ideas in the life sciences with excellent market opportunities. The prize winners were announced and honoured at the German Biotechnologs Days 2014 in Hamburg.
Second place this year went to Regensburg: Anja-Katrin Bosserhoff and Claus Hellerbrand, - both professors at the University Clinic in Regensburg – who have recognized that a single protein contributes to the formation metastases from skin cancer cells. Dr. Thomas Diefenthal, as managing director of BioPark Regensburg and responsible for the BioRegion of Regensburg, was as deputy spokesperson of AK-BioRegio a member of the panel of judges and pleased with this award. The deactivation of this protein in the future could significantly increase the survival chances of patients with malignant melanoma. The treatment is urgently needed, as to date medicine has little to offer for this particularly aggressive skin cancer, he commented on the prize.
