BioPark celebrates 20 year Company Jubilee
With a festive event and 150 guests of honor and an open day BioPark Regensburg GmbH celebrated the company’s anniversary. The guests were able to see on-site for themselves the 20-year success story. From 1999 to 2019 the ground space occupied has increased threefold, the number of companies fourfold and the number of jobs by even tenfold.
At the celebration on 9 July 2019 the CEO Dr. Thomas Diefenthal welcomed 150 guests of honor, in particular those who participated in the startup phase at the BioPark. The Mayor Frau Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer, who is also the Advisory Board Chairperson at BioPark Regensburg GmbH, an enterprise of the City of Regensburg, congratulated the company management and the whole team on its anniversary. She emphasized that in the 20 years three buildings with 18,000 m2, 64 startups and 55 companies had created almost 4,000 jobs. Through this the BioPark has expanded the location of Regensburg into the second largest life science location second to Munich and made it known internationally in this industry. For this the City of Regensburg nominated Dr. Diefenthal last year as an ambassador for the city.
Prof. Dr. Udo Hebel, President of the University of Regensburg, emphasized in his address the close collaboration between the universities and the BioPark on the Regensburg Campus. In the 20 years there has been productive transfer of knowledge, which is impressively documented at the BioPark by the successful foundations derived from the universities and the settlement of external university and university research institutions at the BioPark. Vice versa the BioPark is active in the Regensburg science location with its innovation prize, events for startups and career activities, as well as international trade fair and delegation trips.
In a video message Roland Weigert, State Secretary at the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, extended his best wishes from the State Government. This was then followed by Head of Department MDirig. Dr. Manfred Wolter in his address describing the Regensburg Bioregion as an essential partner in the networks of Bavaria. The BioPark has succeeded in 20 years in operating the cluster management of the Regensburg Bioregion in the black and certifying it as the second largest biotech location in Bavaria with the Silver Award of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative.
In a further podium discussion Prof. Ralf Wagner, Cofounder of the successful company GeneArt, today part of the US Concern ThermoFisher Scientific, emphasized once again the significance of the BioPark for the startup scene.
