Universities and research in Regensburg
In the field of the life sciences and healthcare Regensburg together with the University of Regensburg and the Eastern Bavarian Technical University (OTH) have somewhat to offer in matters of research. Next to the University Clinic there is the Regional Clinic (medbo) in the immediate vicinity of the campus. Additionally some of the professorships at the University Clinic are involved with their research and teaching close to their practice in the regional hospitals, e.g. Caritas-Krankenhaus St. Josef. The University of Regensburg is involved in the elite network of Bavaria with the Masters Degree “Experimental and Clinical Neurosciences”. The subsidiary company at the BioPark, R-Tech GmbH, which operates the Innovation and Start-Up Center TechBase, complements this with its specialties in IT and sensory technology, in particular digitalization. At the TechCampus directly nearby high tech companies can settle next to the University Campus. In total Regensburg has approximately 33,000 enrolled students and at the tertiary institutions approximately 15,000 employees in research, teaching, healthcare and administration.
The strength of Regensburg lies amongst others in the fields of immunology, cell therapy and transplantation medicine. Furthermore research specialties have arisen in the fields of neurology, oncology and medical technology. The RCI Regensburg Center for Interventional Immunology works for example on improved treatment applications for cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease as well as in organ and stem cell transplantation. In the Fraunhofer Project Group for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Tumors, Metabolic and Diseases of Ageing, diagnostic tests are developed to detect disseminated cancer cells early in the development of disease and address possible metastatic precursor cells with treatment.
