Universities and Research in Regensburg

In the field of life sciences the area has several special features to offer to research: Regensburg is successful in the fields of immunology, cell therapy and transplantation medicine. In addition there are specialised areas in neurology, oncology and medical technology.

The RCI Regensburg Center for Interventional Immunology was established in 2010 as a central unit of Regensburg University in order to tie all academic research areas related to the development of new immunotherapies (e.g. Departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery).
The RCI aims at researching, developing and quickly applying improved therapies against cancer, infections, autoimmune diseases as well as in the field of organic and stem cell therapy. Close networking between University and University Hospital thus offers high research efficiency. Eventually, the RCI shall become an extra-faculty research institute of the Leibniz-Association.

The “Regensburg Center of Biomedical Engineering” (RCBE) is an inter-faculty and inter-university research institute of the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (OTH Regensburg) and the Regensburg University (UR). In the Regensburg Center of Biomedical Engineering (RCBE), biomedical expertise of the university and engineering and medical informatics expertise of the OTH are pooled, with a special emphasis on joint research and development, as well as training. The main topics of the RCBE are Medical Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering.

Since 2008 the Fraunhofer Project Group for  Diagnosis and Treatment of Tumors, Metabolic Disease and Disease associated with Ageing have been located in Regensburg as external university research unit. The Group concentrates on the development of diagnostic tests to detect disseminated cancer cells early in the disease and to predict the response to therapy of metastatic progenitor cells. Since 2011 the Fraunhofer Project Group for Sensor Technology Materials have been located as second external university research unit. This group develops sensor dyes and sensor pigments indicating the presence of defined substances of bacteria. They can be directly integrated in textiles (e.g. sensor glove for occupational safety) or foils (e.g. sensor packaging for monitoring freshness of foodstuff).
