University Hospital Regensburg
The University Hospital Regensburg covers all the essential specialties in medicine and dentistry and branches into 28 clinics, polyclinics, institutes and departments with over 4,900 employees. Approximately 700 of these are doctors, more than 1,700 nurses. Furthermore approximately 1,200 employees are accounted for in the medical-technical services and 500 in administration and building services in addition to this. This makes the hospital in this city the third largest employer following BMW and Continental.
As the only hospital with the highest level of care rating III in the whole of East Bavarian area, the hospital has nationwide importance. Almost 38,000 patients are cared for yearly with 839 beds. With a case-mix index of 2.0 the institution is placed at the top of the German university hospitals and treats the most difficult presentation of illnesses throughout the country.
In addition to providing medical care the university clinic serves the medical faculty as the main teaching institution for 2,000 medical and dental students.
The central specialties of the University Hospital Regensburg are on the one hand in the field of immunotherapy and on the other in the areas of tumor research and transplantation medicine. The Regensburg Center for Interventional Immunology (RCI) was founded as a central institution of the University of Regensburg to link together all university research areas working on the development of new immunotherapies (including internal medicine and surgery).

The University Cancer Center Regensburg (UCCR) is also supported by the Tumor Center Regensburg and operates a comprehensive structured extraction and analysis of data on cancer. Since 2008 the Fraunhofer Project Group has been working on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors, metabolic illnesses and disease related to ageing. This group develops diagnostic tests for the early recognition of the metastasis of cancer cells and the prediction of a corresponding treatment of the metastatic precursor cells.
Furthermore, the UKR has one of the leading transplantation centers in Bavaria in which both organ (kidney, heart, liver, pancreas) as well as bone marrow transplantations are carried out. Through targeted research transplantation medicine is to be continually further developed and thereby improve quality of life as well as the chance of survival of those affected.
